Welcome from the Headteacher

Dear Parent/Carers,

I would like to express a warm welcome to all our parents to our friendly and vibrant school. We are fortunate to have a caring and highly committed team of  parents-teachers who work hard to ensure the best outcomes and cultural experiences for our students. Together, we encourage our students to be motivated to learn and to celebrate their achievements in a nurturing and safe environment.

We pride ourselves on setting high expectations in everything we do. We strive for excellence, aiming for the best in terms of conduct and academic achievement.

The best way to learn more about our school is to see the school in action and meet our staff and students. We invite you to make an appointment via the above email address.

The school’s vision is to offer its students an opportunity to develop their ability to speak, read and write in Greek, along with developing their understanding of the Greek Orthodox religion and values, providing them with an opportunity to develop their cultural capital and gain an understanding of their ethnic roots.

The school has planned  liturgies which form an important part of our curriculum and gives an opportunity to develop the ecclesiastical ethos of the school and for the spiritual development of the students. Our Priest in charge, The Very Revd Archimandrite Dr Nikodemos Anagnostopoulos, along with Father John Hookway and Father Evaggelos are on hand to guide, advise and help our students to feel proud and privileged to be part of the St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Community. Keeping our language and traditions alive is paramount and underpins all that we do.

The school programme includes lessons in Greek language, traditional dances, and songs by trained teachers, many of whom have obtained QTS in the UK . Homework is set weekly, and teachers will email you to inform you of your child’s homework tasks in preparation for the next lesson. Completion of the homework tasks is fundamental to ensuring your child makes progress. Please check your children’s homework every week and make sure you sign the homework book.

We take safeguarding seriously.  All members of staff, volunteers TA teachers ,Committee members  are DBS cleared. Teachers hold a Safeguarding certificate and number of teachers hold First Aid certificates. Lessons are differentiated to meet the needs of the students, from reception classes to A Level. At St Demetrios Greek School, no student is left behind. The school is a certified examination centre and our outcomes at GCSE and A Level are strong.

We strongly believe that you can also help to fulfil the school’s mission. With this in mind, we would value your support in attending our events which are conducted during the year. The dates of these will be shared with you in advance. Please ensure that we have your correct email address to ensure that you are receiving our regular newsletters.

I look forward to meeting you in person.
